Name Labels for Back to School 2026 — How to Keep Track of Everything New

Back to school and the labelling challenge
Every August, parents face the same task: everything new needs to be labelled. School bag, pencil case, lunchbox, water bottle, jacket, rain gear, indoor shoes — the list is long.
And every September, things start disappearing. Schools report that up to 30% of lost property is never collected.
What needs labelling for back to school?
Here is the typical list:
- Outerwear: Jacket, rain coat, snowsuit (after-school care)
- Shoes: Indoor shoes, rain boots
- Bags: School bag, gym bag
- Lunch: Lunchbox, water bottle, snack box
- Pencil case: Case, erasers, pencils
- Electronics: Tablet/iPad (from age 8-9)
- Miscellaneous: Keys, sunglasses, cap
That is 15-20 items just for school. Add after-school activities, sports and hobbies, and it easily becomes 30+.
Iron-on labels vs stickers vs QR labels
Iron-on labels (the classic)
You order labels with your child's name and iron them onto clothing.
Good for: Clothes that go in the washing machine. Bad for: Lunchboxes, water bottles, bags, electronics. Cost: About 1-3 DKK per label.
Sticker labels
Self-adhesive name tags for hard surfaces.
Good for: Lunchboxes, water bottles, pencil cases. Bad for: Clothing. May peel in the dishwasher. Cost: About 1-2 DKK per label.
QR name labels
The new generation. Instead of showing your child's name, the label has a QR code. When someone finds the item, they scan the code and can contact you directly — without seeing any personal information.
Good for: Everything. Works on all surfaces, survives washing and rain. Bonus: GPS location on scan, push notification, works for strangers. Cost: About 2-7 DKK per label.
Why QR labels are ideal for back to school
Traditional name tags only work if the finder knows the child. "Emma, class 2B" helps a parent who knows the class — but not a stranger who finds the jacket at the playground after hours.
QR labels solve this:
- The finder scans with their phone — no app needed
- A contact page opens — the finder can message you without seeing your number
- GPS location is saved — you see exactly where the item was found
- Push notification is sent — you know immediately that someone found it
Back to school checklist: label these 10 things
| Item | Risk of getting lost | Recommended label | |------|---------------------|-------------------| | School bag | Low (carried daily) | Iron-on or QR label | | Jacket/coat | High (taken off at recess) | QR label | | Lunchbox | High (left in classroom) | QR label | | Water bottle | Very high (all look alike) | QR label | | Indoor shoes | Medium (stored in cloakroom) | Iron-on | | Pencil case | Medium | Sticker | | Gym bag | High (left in sports hall) | QR label | | Rain gear | High (taken off and forgotten) | QR label | | Tablet/iPad | Low-medium | QR label (high value) | | Keys | Medium | QR label (security) |
When to start labelling
Start 1-2 weeks before school begins. It takes about 30 minutes to label everything if you have labels ready. With QR labels, setup takes under a minute — register the labels in the app and stick them on.
Privacy tip
Many parents worry about displaying their child's name publicly on clothes and bags. With QR labels, you avoid this entirely — the code reveals nothing until scanned, and even then the finder only sees a contact page, never your name or phone number.
